Sports Injuries: Treatment and Rehabilitation

Sports injuries are suffered by both professional and amateur athletes. Injuries are caused by biased assessment of physical condition, non-compliance with safety techniques, and overloading. The most common types of injuries are fractures, muscle strains, and ligament tears. Most injuries require weeks to months of recovery and supervision by rehabilitation specialists.

The most common and dangerous injuries are

  • Muscle sprain. Occurs due to overuse or a blow to a shortened muscle;
  • Anterior cruciate ligament tear. Occurs due to overuse and dislocation of the knee;
  • Achilles tendon injury. Occurs as a result of a bad jump or landing after it, as well as due to a blow to the tendon;
  • Epicondylitis (tennis elbow). Occurs due to excessive strain on the arms, elbows, hands;
  • Meniscus tear of the knee joint. Occurs due to simultaneous flexion and rotation of the joint;
  • Split tibia. Occurs due to excessive stress on the foot;
  • Stress fracture of the foot. Occurs due to excessive stress on the fifth metatarsal bone.

You can get injured in almost any sport. Injuries are high in hockey, soccer, figure skating, artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, track and field, and extreme sports such as snowboarding and downhill skiing. Injuries often occur in various types of wrestling.

Rehabilitation after injury

Treatment is prescribed individually, depending on the type and complexity of the injury.

Sports injuries can be divided into two types – injuries that require rehabilitation to return to daily life and active physical activity, and injuries that are disabling and require a person to adapt to life in a new environment. Disabling injuries are spinal cord injuries and brain injuries.

In some cases, a cold compress is sufficient after an injury. But, as a rule, injuries that belong to traumatology and orthopedics require surgical intervention and fixation (for example, plaster cast, brace, bandage).

Rehabilitation begins after the acute phase and with the permission of the attending physician to perform simple physical exercises. It is recommended to start rehabilitation therapy as soon as possible.
