NZSSD - Podiatry Special Interest

NZSSD - Podiatry Special Interest

The New Zealand Society for the Study of Diabetes - Podiatry Special Interest Group.  A Draft Diabetes Podiatry Assessment Form has been made available for consultation.

This form is to supplement the Diabetes foot risk stratification and triage tool and the screening form already available on the NZSSD website. We have had requests from people working in the arena of diabetes related foot complications for guidance on how to thoroughly assess the foot and identify areas of potential concern. The intent of the form is to guide assessment and care of the diabetes related foot problems to ensure adequate assessment of most of the common risk factors that can lead to ulceration or potential amputation.

It is based on international best practice and work done by International Working Group of Diabetic Foot (IWGDF), The Australian Diabetic foot guidelines group  and the Scottish Foot Action Group. The areas targeted in the assessment form include vascular assessment, neurological assessment, foot deformity, biomechanics, dermatologic and footwear. When available validated assessment tools such as the Neuropathy Disability Score have been incorporated into the form. In the future it is envisaged that the collection of this data will help inform service improvement and delivery of foot care for people with diabetes.

It was initially developed at AUT Podiatry Department by Belinda Ihaka, and then further modifications by NZSSD Podiatry Special Interest Group in particular Steve York, Michele Garrett and Whitney King. Over the past 18 months this form has been trialled in Northland, Waitemata DHB, Canterbury Pegasus PHO.
Ideally this form should be embedded into an electronic management system.
